The Secret Behind Ottawa’s Most Loved Interior Design Style

14 August 2021

Meeting new people and earning their trust when it comes to decorating, revamping, or renovating their homes is both a privilege and a responsibility. As an interior designer in Ottawa, I see every project as an opportunity to interpret each client’s functional needs and aesthetic preferences with care—so the final result feels not just beautiful, but truly personal.

One of the first questions I always ask is, “What style are we aiming for?” Some HGTV-savvy clients can name their dream look with ease. Others know what they like when they see it, but describing it can be tricky—and that’s completely okay.

That’s why I wanted to write about the style I’m asked about most often: transitional interior design in Ottawa. It’s a timeless approach that blends classic and contemporary elements to create spaces that feel refined, balanced, and uniquely yours.

What is Transitional Interior Design?

At its core, transitional design is the art of balance. It blends traditional details with contemporary elements to create spaces that feel timeless, fresh, and cohesive. Think of it as the perfect harmony between old and new—a modern sofa paired with antique wood accents, or clean-lined tables placed against the backdrop of architectural molding.

How to Achieve a Beautiful Transitional Look

While every space is unique, here are a few foundational steps I use when curating a transitional interior:

1. Start with an anchor piece
Choose the largest piece of furniture first—often a sofa or bed—and let it guide the rest of your selections. If it leans traditional in shape, contrast it with contemporary accents like sleek side tables or minimalist chairs.

2. Balance the proportions
Traditional furnishings can feel bulky. Look for pieces that evoke classic lines but in a more refined, updated scale.

3. Layer neutrals with thoughtful color
Stick to a calm, classic palette and layer in colour with purpose. Accent pillows, area rugs, or drapery are perfect places to add pattern or introduce a bold hue.

4. Curate meaningful artwork and décor
A transitional space should reflect your personality. Select art and objects that resonate with you, not just what’s trendy.

5. Elevate with lighting
Lighting is the finishing touch—the jewelry of the home. A statement light fixture, especially in a modern style, can bring the entire space to life. Just be sure to consider size and placement for each room.

6. Stick to a consistent mix
If your ideal balance is 60% modern and 40% traditional, keep that ratio in mind throughout the home for a cohesive feel.

Transitional design continues to be the go-to choice for many of my clients across Ottawa, especially those who want their home to feel warm and welcoming while still having a clean, elevated aesthetic. Whether you’re renovating a single room or designing your forever home, blending styles with intention is the key to creating a space that stands the test of time.
