Choosing the Perfect Area Rug for Your Home

23 July 2020

If you’re looking to elevate your space, choosing the perfect area rug can instantly transform your home. As a decorator, I believe the right rug ties a room together, adding warmth, character, and comfort. Over the years, I’ve come to understand the importance of selecting the perfect area rug based on fibers, size, style, and functionality, and I’d love to take you on a journey to discover how the right rug can enhance your space.

I’ve always had a soft spot for rugs. I can still picture the wool, hand-tufted Persian rugs in the middle of our family room from my childhood. And there was a green one on the wall behind the sofa that brings back so many happy memories. It might not be your childhood experience, but I’ll tell you this: Oriental area rugs were once a very popular piece of home decor in Kazakhstan, where I grew up.

Back then, I knew very little about their construction. What drew me in was the warmth they added to the room and the feeling of safety they created—a feeling shared by any child lucky enough to grow up surrounded by cozy, meaningful things.

As an interior decorator, I help my clients create spaces that are functional, authentic, and truly reflect their lifestyle. When it comes to area rugs, understanding the fibers is key to making a purchase you’ll be happy with. Wool rugs, for example, are my top choice. Wool offers ultimate comfort, natural stain resistance, and durability. While hand-tufted wool rugs tend to shed a little in the first couple of years, that’s completely normal. Once those loose fibers are gone, wool rugs will last you for many years.

Wool and viscose blends are very popular now, especially for intricate contemporary designs, as viscose adds a beautiful, lustrous shine to the texture of a rug. However, it’s important to note that viscose isn’t stain-resistant, so these blends might not be ideal for homes with small children or pets.

If you’re after something a little more affordable or durable, synthetic materials like polypropylene could be a great option. They offer stain-resistant properties and are machine woven, which makes them more budget-friendly. Nylon is also a great choice for high-traffic areas; it can stand up to heavy foot traffic, which is why it’s commonly used in commercial spaces like restaurants or hotels.

If you have pets (or are planning to get one), an indoor/outdoor rug might be a smart solution. They are easy to clean and just as beautiful as traditional indoor rugs.

The longevity of an area rug depends on its fibers, weave type, and how well it’s maintained. A well-maintained wool hand-knotted rug can be passed down through generations, and one made by hand truly carries a soul. Many hand-knotted rugs are crafted in India, and creating one can take months. On the other hand, flat-woven rugs are thinner, without pile, and often reversible, offering a different kind of aesthetic and durability.

Do You Need an Underpad?

An underpad or underlay is an essential part of the rug experience. It provides three key benefits:

  1. Grip: It keeps the rug in place and prevents slipping, especially on hard floors.

  2. Durability: The right underpad can extend your rug’s life by reducing wear and tear on the fibers and backing.

  3. Comfort: It adds cushion, providing a soft, cozy feel underfoot and a bit of safety for small children.

Common Rug Sizing Mistakes

First-time rug buyers often make the mistake of choosing one that’s too small. A good rule of thumb is that at least the front feet of your furniture should be on the rug to anchor the space and create a visually cohesive zone. In dining rooms, select a rug large enough to hold all chair legs, even when they’re pulled out. Rectangular or round rugs are popular choices for dining areas.

What About Style?

When it comes to selecting a rug, most designers recommend starting with the rug itself, as it sets the tone for the entire room. But if the rug is the finishing touch that completes your space, that’s perfectly fine too! If you have bold furniture or bright patterns in your decor, choose a more neutral-colored rug to balance the space. A calmer, neutral interior, on the other hand, can benefit from a rug with daring patterns and hues to add visual interest.

So, what are you sinking your feet into?
