Designing a Kitchen That Works for You

20 June 2022

The kitchen is the heart of the home—but if it isn’t working for your lifestyle, it can quickly become a daily source of stress. Whether you love to entertain, cook with family, or simply enjoy a quiet morning coffee in peace, your kitchen should support how you live. That’s why a well-executed kitchen remodel isn’t just about choosing beautiful finishes. It’s about creating a space that’s highly functional, thoughtfully laid out, and tailored to you.

If you’re considering a kitchen renovation in Ottawa, working with an interior design professional can make all the difference—from big-picture planning to the smallest details.

Understanding How You Live

Every kitchen tells a story, and great design starts with understanding yours.

Do you bake every weekend? Host family gatherings? Need a clear view of the kids while cooking dinner? These are the kinds of lifestyle details we explore during the early stages of the design process. Our role as interior designers is to translate how you use your kitchen into a layout that flows, functions, and feels right.

A good kitchen designer doesn’t rely on trends—they design around your day-to-day life.

Creating a Custom Kitchen Design

While cabinetry, counters, and backsplash tiles are essential, your kitchen deserves more than a Pinterest board of pretty finishes. With a custom kitchen design, every decision—from sightlines to storage—is intentional.

We look at how the space connects to surrounding rooms, how lighting will work throughout the day, and how materials will perform over time. We also ensure that every element—from appliance placement to pantry access—feels effortless. The result? A cohesive, elevated kitchen that feels like a natural extension of your home.

Avoiding Costly Mistakes

Designing a kitchen on your own can feel overwhelming—and it’s easy to make expensive mistakes. Common missteps like undersized islands, poor lighting plans, or inefficient storage can be frustrating and costly to fix later.

With our full-service design approach, these risks are minimized. We guide you through the process, helping you make confident decisions and ensuring every detail is considered—before construction begins. From drawings and finish selections to contractor coordination, we’re with you every step of the way.

Saving Time and Making Confident Decisions

Many clients come to us feeling overwhelmed by choices and unsure where to start. Our role is to simplify the renovation journey.

We curate design options based on your style, budget, and practical needs, so you’re not left second-guessing. You’ll receive a clear plan, thoughtful guidance, and a partner who knows what to expect at every stage. It’s a collaborative, streamlined process designed to save you time and give you confidence in every decision.

A Real-Life Kitchen Remodel in Ottawa

Sharon, the heart of her family’s kitchen, came to us looking for more functionality. She loved to bake and cook but was constantly frustrated by the lack of organized storage. There was no good spot for trays, baking supplies, or small appliances.

To make things more challenging, the closed-off layout made it nearly impossible for two people to use the space at once. It was time for a fresh start—something practical, beautiful, and full of character.

During our first in-home consultation, I introduced our full-service kitchen design process. We handle everything—from space planning and finish selection to contractor coordination and project oversight.

Together, we reimagined the layout, prepared detailed plans, discussed finish options, and reviewed the renovation budget. We talked about timeline expectations and communication preferences—making sure it felt like the right fit.

A few days later, we met again—this time with one of our trusted general contractors. Sharon and Mike shared their priorities and vision. We discussed cabinetry, countertops, flooring, appliance plans, and most importantly, how they wanted the space to feel.

Before

Here’s what Sharon and Mike shared about their experience:

“We initially contracted with Marina to renovate our kitchen/dining room area. She paid strict attention to our wishes when we described the scope of the project and we were delighted with her design concept and the products she recommended. She was open to our opinion if or when a change became necessary and paid attention to the smallest detail. She was a joy to work with, and her follow-up once the project was completed was faultless. The fact that she has contractors with whom they regularly work was a bonus, as we were assured of their work quality. We are so pleased with our kitchen renovation that we have now contracted with Marina to renovate our en-suite bathroom.
