Fabulous contemporary home undergoes a stunning decorating makeover

6 October 2023

When you find the home of your dreams you know it right then. This happened to a young couple I had a pleasure working with on their previous home.
Shannon said that they were not actively looking for a new home, but saw this stunning home popping on the market and could not resist making it theirs.

Nested pleasantly in the City View area of Ottawa, this house is a newbuilt with a striking contemporary design. Quality finishes that impress from the first sight as you walk in to this pretty abode.

Family Room

If you have ever moved you know that existing furnishings might no longer work in the new layout. Understandably, having a nicely designed home puts even more responsibility on the home owners to have it professionally decorated to enhance the inherited features and add their personality to it.

We started with the family room’s focal point, the fireplace with a dramatic marble surround. Everything we did was meant to read luxury. Every element of décor has to support the drama of the organic dance of black and white stripes of marble.

Beside the visual impression creating a comfortable space for relaxing and entertaining was equally important. So, we placed a minimalistic coffee table in front of the fireplace and flanked it with a curvy sofa and two swivel chairs on the opposite side of it. Adding side tables, insured that there is a surface for a drink for everyone enjoying the space.

A small black boucle ottoman was placed in front of the fireplace to allow a good view of the dramatic architectural feature. Having a pet friendly rug was a must with the furry family member and we went with tried and tested stain resistant fibers.

Wall décor and paintings are the jewelry of the space. Unique shadow boxes featuring 3-dimensional layered string art, hand threaded around individually hammered pin nails completed the wall between the large window and the patio door.

In the entry area a large wooden console with drawers for storage and a glass top was adorned by an oversized round mirror with a black wood frame. I loved the giraffe sculpture that the homeowners had on it to greet friends and family.

Bedroom

In the bedroom we used an existing furniture set and added a couple of colourful finishing touches, such as the cobalt velour ottoman, custom bedding and decorative window treatments in a fun animal pattern.

Table lamps with a glossy crackles ceramic bases added symmetry and light for the evening reading.

Every home is a reflection of the home owners’ lifestyle and taste, and, when decorated successfully, tells their story. What is yours?
