Can You Design Happiness?

30 September 2024

Imagine if we could design spaces specifically to enhance our happiness. For many designers, the connection between living environments and emotional well-being is a core principle. In fact, a key question I ask my clients is, “How would you like the space to feel?”

A thoughtfully designed personal space has the power to provide comfort and joy, but what that space looks like can vary widely from person to person. Let’s explore how beautiful spaces impact our brains and overall well-being.

The Essence of Beauty and Joyful Design

Beauty might be in the eye of the beholder, but where does the concept of beauty actually originate? Donald H. Ruggles, author of Beauty, Neuroscience & Architecture; Timeless Patterns and Their Impact on Our Well-Being, explains that beauty arises from an intuitive, emotional response in our ancient brain. It’s the recognition of patterns that signal potential pleasure.

Armed with this understanding, designers can create spaces that engage our senses through elements like sound, light, colour and texture. While trends can be enticing, its crucial to customize a home to reflect the unique preferences and idiosyncrasies of its inhabitants. Designing spaces to suit various temperaments and lifestyles, especially in shared environments, can be challenging. Collaborating closely with a decorator ensures that everyone’s personality is considered in the design.

Thoughtfully chosen art not only beautifies a space but also enhances well-being. Art elevates mood and deepens your connection to your environment. Select art based on emotional resonance rather than cost, similar to adopting positive habits like meditation. While lacking these habits isn’t harmful, incorporating them can greatly improve your mood.

Nature-Inspired Design for Emotional Wellness

Neuroaesthetics research shows that natural elements benefit mental health. Incorporate live plants, fresh flowers, natural materials, and organic shapes to create a calming atmosphere. Bringing the outdoors inside can make your home feel more refreshing and uplifting.

The Role of Light and Colour in Design

Colour affects a space’s energy. Colour psychology indicates that different hues evoke various emotional responses. Designers use this theory to create tailored ambiances. Personal colour preferences matter, so including favourite colours can make a space feel uniquely yours.

Lighting is equally important. Studies show that bright light intensifies emotions, while poor lighting can lead to depression. Many designers, including New York-based architect Ramona Albert, highlight the importance of natural light for comfort. Simple changes, such as adding floor lamps or pot lights, can enhance your home’s lighting and overall quality.

Can You Design Happiness?

While interior designers can’t control emotions entirely, they can significantly influence mood through design. By integrating principles from design, art, nature, psychology, and lighting, you can create spaces that foster happiness and well-being.
