Honouring memory at home

5 November 2026

On November 11, we pause to remember those who served, and the families who waited at home.

Remembrance Day is about holding on to what matters. In many homes, that includes a medal in a drawer, letters in a box, or a grandparent’s chair in a spare room. These pieces carry real stories. They deserve a place of honour in the rooms where we live every day.

As a decorator in Ottawa, I see this often. Clients own meaningful pieces and are unsure how to display their keepsakes at home with care. Here are three steps that work.

1. Choose a focal point for your keepsakes

Select one wall, shelf or console and gather the pieces there. A single considered display carries more weight than items scattered through the house.

  • Group by theme, such as one family member, one era or one story.
  • Keep 2 to 3 inches between frames so the grouping reads as one composition.
  • Centre the display at roughly 57 inches from the floor, which is comfortable eye level for most people.
  • Mix formats. A framed photograph, a shadow box and a small object on a shelf create depth.

A hallway console, a living room wall beside the fireplace or a quiet corner of the dining room all make strong locations.

2. Frame with care

Medals, letters and photographs are irreplaceable, so the framing matters as much as the placement. A shadow box gives three-dimensional pieces room and presence. Archival, acid-free matting and UV-protective glazing keep paper, ribbon and fabric in good condition for decades.

For this, I send my clients to Amy at Walkerworks Picture Framing.

Meet Amy at Walker Works

For years, I have trusted Walkerworks with the framing on my projects. Amy, the owner, is the reason. Her skill and eye for detail are exceptional, and I highly recommend her.

Amy is the point of contact for anyone who would like to frame a piece or create a shadow box, whether it is a medal, a stack of letters or a photograph that has been waiting in a drawer.

3. Light your display well

Lighting turns a collection into a feature. Layer three types:

  • Ambient light for the whole room.
  • Task light for reading and everyday use.
  • Accent light for the display itself.

A picture light above a framed piece or a dimmable lamp beside a shadow box draws the eye and adds warmth. Choose bulbs around 2700K for a soft, welcoming glow, and add dimmers wherever you can so the mood adjusts from morning to evening. This matters most in the fall and winter, when daylight fades early in Ottawa and your lighting carries more of the day.
