Cozy Country Home

4 May 2023

In Winter of 2021 I met with a lovely family about decorating their new custom built bungalow. Backyard of this home presented a fabulous scene from the open concept living room, kitchen and dining area and was very private facing a treed acreage lot.

We chatted about the  functional needs of the family and determined the size of the party to be seated in the main living area when entertaining. A smiley furry friend, a young Labrador retriever puppy, had to be taken in consideration when selecting fabrics and rugs to make the home a comfortable place for all family members. Further, we talked about the feel of the home to achieve and it was to be cozy, comfortable, inviting and airy. Country style was the theme that the home owners integrated in exterior and interior finishes of the house and it was logical to pursue the same style in decorating.

When you walk into a home, the entryway quickly forms a first impression of the house. Therefore, a narrow rustic top console was placed to greet guests and display sentimental decor. Two upholstered poufs were nested under the console table to offer comfortable seating for anyone needing a surface to tie laces and putting shoes on. A sight at the custom mural on the wall of the stair landing leading to the basement is reflected in a large wood framed mirror.

Colours such as warm yellow, greens, browns, blues and whites that are found in nature are typical for country homes. Hence, we went with light blue, yellows and browns in our colour palette.

Having breakfast at the kitchen counter became much more comfortable with pretty upholstered wood stools with sculptural bubble legs. A unique two-piece wall decor made of hand pieced natural wood chips with a burnished wash was used to create balance.

When decorating an open concept space it is fun to use swivel chairs floating in the room.  Turning to the kitchen zone easily and continuing a conversation when people move in the space is an added benefit. The striped slipcovered chairs on the photos swivel.

Though there was no need for a privacy solution for the large patio door and window to the backyard, adding decorative pleated panels with contrasting fabric on the inside to patio doors and a custom roman shade on the kitchen window completed the space.

Looking back at the flat lay of fabrics and selections it is fun to think how the home owners envisioned their space in anticipation of a real transformation.

Feedback from the home owners of this beautiful home:

Working with Marina and CPI interiors was a wonderful experience. Marina focused on our likes and dislikes and helped us to transform a vision into a reality.
Her expertise and creative ideas took our living space from dull and boring to amazing and our favourite place to be.
Updates about our project and addressing our concerns were prompt. Service was excellent and I highly recommend Marina and her team of experts. We will call again for our next project.
