So, you have just had your new sofa delivered and the family is very excited about the new comfortable piece.
There are a couple of things you need to know to prolong its lifespan and keep it looking like new as the years go by.
- Flip your cushions, both seats and backs (if they are detached), regularly. Rotate your cushions so that the cushion in everyone’s favourite spot doesn’t get all of the use while the others are ignored. Of course, the cushions on a family room sectional will require more attention than those on that chair in the living room that gets used much less frequently. Just as a side note, feather and down filled cushions usually require more maintenance to keep them looking sharp.
- Address accidents immediately. When a spill happens, clean it right away by following the fabric care instructions provided by your designer. If you are the lucky owner of a piece upholstered in a performance fabric, cleaning is usually easier due to the stain resistant properties of the fabric fibers. With some fabrics even a red wine or tomato sauce spill is just a matter of using soap and water.
- Fluff and fix pillows. Yes, even foam cushions will need TLC.
- Better quality sofas usually come with cushions wrapped in cotton ticking and cushion cases with zippers. This makes it possible to take the cushions out and have the cases dry cleaned when the time comes.
Invest into the best quality upholstered furniture you can afford! It will last you much longer and will look like new longer too. Our sectional sofa that was purchased right before COVID celebrated its four year anniversary recently and it still looks new after years of heavy use with working from home, remote school and extended screen times.
